Polished Concrete is perfect for commercial and industrial flooring.

Commercial spaces have greater demands placed on them when it comes to performance and durability. They often need high-performance finishes or coatings so they can withstand heavy foot traffic, abrasion, and stains and to make them easier to maintain. They also must be slip resistant to avoid injuries to staff and customers.

Polished concrete offers all of these benefits. It’s also a durable product. While coatings can fail with time or be subject to abrasion, foot traffic and vehicular wear, diamond ground polished concrete can outlast other flooring options.

Polished concrete floors with a high-gloss are also popular in commercial and retail facilities because they brighten indoor spaces by reflecting overhead lighting, resulting in less energy costs for lighting big spaces. Polished concrete floors also become dust proof through the process of densification.

Polished concrete design options.

When deciding on polished concrete as your floor choice, there are many design options beyond the simple, shiny surface you may be thinking of.

We can help you specify a custom polished concrete package based on your choosing. These options include an array of stunning choices for the final sheen, aggregate exposure and other decorative options such as stains, dyes, borders, and custom designs that will not wear. In a commercial space, the design of the flooring can require specific colored or patterns to direct the consumer’s eye and improve traffic flow. Concrete flooring may also be graphically enhanced via a stencil to reflect the theme, logo, or brand of a restaurant or business.

In a residential space such as a garage, we can put your favorite team’s logo into the floor and polish it. Aggregate exposure is also an option to consider, we can expose small/fine aggregate to produce a “salt and pepper” look, or we can get our grind on and expose the aggregate fully. Likewise, we can omit any grinding steps and do “cream polish”, which involves no grinding so there will be no aggregate exposed. However, the finish can depend on the state of the concrete floor. If the floor needs any remediation, we may have to grind to fix it.

The cost of concrete polishing.

This varies on a lot of factors. For concrete polishing, we typically charge $5-$8 per square feet, but this is for polishing only. Coating removal, or removal of another flooring type will be an additional cost item. Significant prep for a concrete floor in rough shape will also demand extra costs for that service. Decorative add-ons such as dyes, stencils, etc are also separate costs.

Considering the durability and economical advantage of converting to polished concrete, it’s no surprise why more and more commercial and retail facilities, warehouses, residential spaces, and business offices, are catching on to these beautiful, high-luster floors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you want to know about polished concrete?

Polished concrete is a sustainable, highly durable flooring option that appeals to home and business owners because of its beauty and low maintenance. The process requires multiple steps in which a contractor utilizes heavy-duty machines equipped with fine grits of diamond-impregnated particles to grind concrete floor surfaces to a high-gloss finish or desired shine, similar to sanding wood.

Polished concrete is fast becoming a top option for all types of spaces – homeowners are choosing it for their private residences, especially in high traffic living areas or on their garage floors. For commercial spaces, polished concrete is used in large warehouses, retail stores, hotels, restaurants, and office spaces. Even schools are switching to polished concrete!

Having polished concrete in your space is a beautiful choice and has many benefits. It is extremely durable, especially in high-traffic areas, and it is nearly impossible to chip or damage. Plus, an expertly installed, sealed and maintained polished concrete floor far surpasses the lifespan of other floor coverings, as it can be expected to last a hundred years or more.

Speaking of maintenance, polished concrete floors typically require very little upkeep – simply sweep for dust and occasionally damp mop it to remove scuffs and restore its shine.

Unfortunately, no. The current state of the concrete is big driving factor in answering this question. Some floors may be too deteriorated to be polished. A (free) in-person inspection must take place to determine that assessment. If you’re concrete floor is too damaged, that doesn’t mean you are out of options. We could possibly use an overlay to bring back your concrete floor to live.

We also install self-leveling overlays such as Ardex K521, which is a polishable overlay.

Polished concrete floors are one of the easiest floor coverings to maintain! It does not require harsh cleaners, stripping, or waxing – ever! The best maintenance is to simply use a broom to sweep away dust and debris, and occasionally use a damp mop!

Concrete can be cold, but traditional ceramic tile flooring or natural stone flooring can be even more so. Plus, concrete has the ability to radiate heat and store solar energy, which can save you money on your utility bills. Carpet, ceramic tile, wood, laminates, and linoleum can’t do that!

Any non-carpeted floors can be slippery when wet, but polished concrete floors are easily sealed with a non-slip epoxy coating to prevent falls and injuries.

The timeline is different for each job, and it is a process – but it is well worth it because once the project is finished, you can enjoy your polished concrete floor for decades! The key factors that affect installation are as follows: area size of the project, condition of existing floor, and the level of complexity (i.e., decorative and design choices).

Polished concrete does not require a coating (although that can be an option you choose!), so typically once our professionals finish our process, you can be walking on and enjoying your shiny floors right away!
